The Quapaw Farmers Market & Food Hub is one of Quapaw Nation’s many agricultural operations. In 2010, farm-to-table initiatives reprioritized food sovereignty as a means to fulfill the Nation’s mission for economic self-sufficiency, land and resource protection, and improving the health and welfare of the community, all while maintaining cultural heritage. Quapaw Nation defines food sovereignty as, “the right of Native peoples to retain their cultural identity and to reserve fundamental rights, including the right to produce food, granted in treaties and other legal documents. It is Today, these initiatives include the first Tribally-owned meat processing plant, a feeding facility, cattle, bison, greenhouses, beehives, row crops, and a coffee roasting facility amongst others to increase community access to fresh, healthy foods; build tribal economic growth and increase tribal control of the local food system.
