HOW TO START SEEDS NDOORS
Early spring is the perfect time to start growing many plants. Though it is still too cold outside (depending on your climate zone), most plants can be started indoors. If you have ever thought about starting your seeds indoors before, this blog will guide you through a few simple steps to help get you started. The goal of starting seeds indoors is to have them hardy enough to be transplanted whenever the weather aligns with the plants’ ideal growing conditions.
In this guide, we have chosen a Sweetheart Cherry Tomato variety for the process. These seeds are easy to germinate, and they’re also a very common fruit that we see in most of our home gardens. You can find in-depth seed starting instructions for your specific variety on the back of your seed packet. It also might indicate when to grow indoors based on your growing zone and the timing of the winter’s last frost. Click here if you are unsure of your growing zone. Happy gardening!
Equipment:
Seed starting tray
○ Some budget-friendly alternatives are eggshells, small paper cups, or used plastic bottles cut in half
Watering can
Seed starting mix
Garden trowel
Instructions:
Once you feel like you understand your specific seed planting instructions, it is time to get a container. We used a seed starting tray but there are many household materials that can work just as well. Poke two (2) to three (3) holes in the bottom for soil drainage.
Fill container with seed starting mix and water so that the soil is moist before planting.
Once containers are prepared, lightly scratch the surface of the soil in the first cell and lay one (1) seed over the top. Lightly cover the seed with soil. Repeat for the remaining cells until all seeds are planted. Do not place more than one seed per cell.
Even out any uneven soil clumps with your hands.
Gently water the soil again to make sure they are good and wet for the growing process. You should see growth in approximately seven (7) to ten (10) days.
Place your container in an area with adequate light and water as recommended on the seed packet.
