Season-Extending Innovation

High Tunnel

The Quapaw Nation’s High Tunnel Project, led by the Food Sovereignty Department, is transforming the way fresh, local produce is grown and distributed within the community. These structures, often referred to as hoop houses, allow farmers to grow food in a protected environment, extending the harvest season beyond traditional limits. This means vegetables and herbs can thrive through changing weather conditions—allowing earlier planting in the spring, protection through the summer, and extended harvesting well into the fall and winter months.

With multiple high tunnels now in place—and more planned—the Nation is able to cultivate over 20 different varieties of produce. From leafy greens to root vegetables and fresh herbs, these crops are harvested and supplied directly to the Quapaw Farmers Market, the Food Hub, and tribal entities like the Downstream Casino Resort. The program not only enhances local food security and access to nutritious options but also supports workforce development, cultural practices, and climate-resilient agriculture. It’s a living example of how tradition and innovation can work together to sustain the land and feed the people.
