Seed Starting Basics: Tips for Healthy Seedlings

  1. How and where to shop for your seeds. Look for seed catalogs, regional varieties, and seed exchange groups online. Don’t forget about Quapaw Nation’s Si Ho-ta Seed Library, which offers free seeds each year.
  2. Anticipate some losses.
Always plant a few extra seeds to account for those that may not germinate or may die off later.
  3. Use a grow light to control light requirements.
Most vegetables need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight. A grow light prevents seedlings from becoming too leggy.
  4. Start with clean containers.
Seedling flats, peat pots, or even egg cartons work. Ensure containers have drainage holes to prevent overwatering.
  5. Label your containers now!
Avoid confusion by labeling each container, especially when testing multiple plant varieties.
  6. Pre-treat certain seeds if needed.
Some seeds require soaking, scratching, or chilling before planting—check the packet for instructions.
  7. Maintain the right temperature.
Seeds sprout best at 65–75°F (18–24°C). Keep them warm for optimal growth.
  8. Rotate your seedlings.
Rotate containers near windows to prevent uneven growth, or adjust grow lights as seedlings get taller.
